Fashion Photography of the 1950s
SPEAKER: Susan van Wyk, Curator, Photography
Fashion reflects the mood of the times and photography captures
its image. In the 1950s, the desire to shake off war time constraints
and a newly found affluence, led to an expanded interest in fashion
and, in turn, to an increased role for fashion photography. Ranging
from elegant studio studies of opulent eveningwear, to dynamic
outdoor location work, fashion photography in the 1950s was sophisticated
and exciting.

FILM SCREENING: '56 FLIX: SCIENCE FICTION, DOUBLE FEATURE
With an introduction by Paul Harris (Film Critic The Age,
Film Buff's Forecast)
Gasp
as aliens snatch human bodies and earth battles it out with the
flying saucers! In the tradition of great late night double features,
NGV on Russell, Filmgate and RMIT Union Arts are proud to present
a night of interactive science fiction mayhem. While 1956 saw
the Olympic Torch carried through the streets of Melbourne, Hollywood
cast its eyes upwards to the stars for answers to the Cold War
chaos that had America in its grips. Relive the terror of political
allegory with "Earth vs. The Flying Saucers" and "Invasion
of the Body Snatchers". Thrill at the sight of paper plates
whizzing through the air! Jump at the chance to win some fantastic
scifi prizes! Includes Refreshments.
