The Altered Land Environmental Trail includes 45 Australian works which highlight the ways in which the Australian landscape has changed with time and provides fresh interpretations of well known paintings which uncover hidden stories of the Australian landscape.
The trail explores how the Australian landscape was depicted by early colonial artists such as John Glover and Eugéne von Guèrard as well as artists from the Heidelberg School, including Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin. The trail also features artists from the twentieth century, including Fred Williams and Russell Drysdale through to contemporary artists such as Fiona Hall.
Major themes of the trail include the effects of bushfire, agriculture, land clearing, erosion, drought and the introduction of new species on the natural environment; the use of the land by Indigenous people; and the importance of national parks in the ongoing preservation and sustainability of our precious environment.
The Altered Land Environmental Trail has been jointly produced by Parks Victoria and the National Gallery of Victoria. Together we respectfully acknowledge the original custodians of this land, the Kulin Nation, their rich culture and spiritual connection to the natural environment.
