Pins and Needles, Textiles & Technique from the Australian Collection

NGV Australia: 14 February – 4 July Myer Fashion and Textiles Gallery, Level 2

Pins and Needles brings together more than 30 contemporary, historical, functional, wearable and purely decorative works from the NGV’s Australian Fashion and textiles collection. The range of works gathered for Pins and Needles celebrate the richness of our local textile design heritage through the distinctive and innovative approaches that Australian textile artists have developed.

Tour and Tea: Victorian Tapestry Workshop
Artistic approaches and traditional hand-made Gobelin style (used since the 14th Century) have made the Victorian Tapestry Workshop one of the world’s great centres for contemporary hand-woven tapestry. With the return of the spectacular Rodger Kemp tapestries (woven by this workshop) to the Great Hall, take a tour to engage with the history and skills of local weavers.

Set in bohemian, turn-of-the-century Melbourne, The Ishmael Club offers a delicious insight into the lives of some of Australia’s most celebrated artists - Will Dyson, Norman Lindsay and his sister Ruby Lind.

The Ishmael Club flourished at Fasoli’s Café in the bohemian heyday of the early 1900s, with habituées including artists, poets, actors, journalists, musicians, emigrés and politicians.
