Darkness & Light: Caravaggio & his World features key paintings demonstrating the scope and quality of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio's (1571-1610) revolutionary vision, and the vision of his followers.

Caravaggio Film Festival

The Birth of Baroque (28 Mins)
This film highlights the architecture and art of the baroque and Caravaggio’s place in this European art movement.

Caravaggio (93 Mins)
While Caravaggio’s paintings reflect a profound and original awareness his private life was fraught with prostitutes, brawls, duels, arrests and liberal cases. A film by Derek Jarman. Please note: this film is R rated.

The Arrested Moment (30 Mins)
This film explores how painters achieved movement in still life. The program is a journey from the time of Caravaggio, through photography to the work of Hockney and Pollock.

The venue for all films is Clemenger Auditorium NGV International. All films are free and no pre-bookings are necessary.

An evening at Stephanie Alexander’s Richmond Hill Café & Larder with Laurie Benson, NGV Assistant Curator, International Art

This special event lets you discover more about the fruits, cheeses and wines of the regions that would have influenced Caravaggio. In the wonderful setting especially created, NGV’s Laurie Benson will provide a visual overview to detail the tasty morsels and other symbolisms that feature in the extraordinarily rich still life paintings of Caravaggio and his World. Enjoy mature seasonal Italian cheeses, matched with delicious Italian wines, as we follow the travels of Caravaggio from Milan, Rome and Naples. We will be entertained by live baroque music. Wine and food is included in the cost.

This major retrospective exhibition celebrates the work of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, one of Australia's greatest painters. Clifford Possum had a ground-breaking career and was one of the very first artists to begin painting in Papunya. Clifford Possum was one of the last surviving members of Papunya Tula Artists. This is the first retrospective of a Papunya Tula artist in an Australian public gallery. The retrospective covers the artist's thirty year career, especially his most outstanding decade between 1972 and 1982.

Floor talk: Dr Vivian Johnson, curator of the exhibition will take a guided tour providing an in-depth look at the artist, his technique and Dreaming stories.

NGV Artbeat On the Road - TarraWarra Museum of Art

Gain a special insight to Australia’s first philanthropically funded public museum – opened on Thursday, 18 December 2003 – The TarraWarra Museum of Art.

Located in the grounds of the TarraWarra winery (Yarra Valley), with magnificent views, the purpose-built world-class gallery is a gift to the people of Australia from dedicated arts patrons and collectors Eva and Marc Besen.

Artbeat Members will be treated to a special tour by TarraWarra Director (and NGV Trustee) Maudie Palmer. Maudie will provide an insight into selected works from the TarraWarra Museum of Art collection, revealing the development of painting over the last 50 years of Australian modernism and the historical and cultural context in which they were created.

The event cost is all inclusive of return bus transport, a delicious late lunch at the restaurant and TarraWarra wine. Please note that this event has a minimum booking requirement of 48 people.
