Perforated metal flooring on walkway leading around new exhibition tower, NGV International world rush_4 artists

4 December 2003 to 22 February 2004

Celebrating the opening of NGV International, this exhibition showcases the work of leading Italian architect and designer, Mario Bellini, the principal architect for the major NGV redevelopment.

The exhibition features an innovative multi-media presentation covering Bellini’s celebrated forty-year practice in the fields of architecture and design. The exhibition display and visual presentation is designed in close collaboration with Bellini and his studio and include objects from Bellini’s celebrated CAB furniture series to design classics such as the Olivetti typewriter. Bellini’s industrial designs for other companies such as Yamaha, Brionvega and Erco are also showcased in the presentation. Special emphasis is placed on the many and varied influences on Bellini’s practice.

Bellini was born in Milan in 1935 and graduated in 1959 from the Architecture School in Milan, where he still lives and works today. Since the 1980’s Bellini has worked chiefly as an architect in Europe, Japan, the USA and the Arab Emirates.

The NGV is the fourth international institution to hold a major monographic exhibition of Bellini’s work. This exhibition signals the beginning of an on-going program of exhibitions focussing on prominent architects and designers.

The full-colour catalogue is available from the NGV Shop.
