On other prints of this photograph Cameron titled it Gretchen at the altar
of the Virgin and, in one case, she added 'see Faust' to the title. Gretchen
was one of Goethe's female characters. The costume and gesture of the model
are often compared to Pre-Raphaelite paintings of women.
