Sir John Herschel (1792–1871) was a scientist and astronomer who also made significant contributions to the development of photography. He was one of Charles and Julia Margaret Cameron's oldest friends. Cameron corresponded with Herschel throughout her career and actively sought his advice on both technical and aesthetic aspects of her photographic work.
