Joseph Joachim (1831–1907) was a brilliant Hungarian violinist and composer who studied in Vienna and Leipzig and knew the composers Brahms and Mendelssohn. His most important composition was the Hungarian Concerto. Cameron took this photograph at her sister Sarah's home, Little Holland House, at a time when the violinist was also sitting for a portrait by the painter, G.F. Watts. Joachim has a dark velvet curtain draped around him that Cameron used in several other portraits.
