In this narrative photograph Cameron depicts a scene from life rather than
an interpretation of a written text. The children are wearing the costume of
the piferrari or Italian strolling musicians. The real Italian piferrari,
appeared in many travel photographs of the time, often as a type of
romanticised peasantry.
