The sitter for this photograph was Marie Spartali (1843–1927), an artist who had close associations with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of artists. She was also the model for paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown. Spartali studied art with Rossetti and Brown, exhibiting her own paintings in London in 1867 and 1873.
