In this compositionally complex image Cameron has brought her camera lens as close as possible to the heads of her sitters in an arrangement that would have taxed the capabilities of her equipment. Cameron combines elements of several Biblical stories in this photograph, one of which is Christ's visit to the Temple in Jerusalem when he was twelve years old. However, the model for Christ in this photograph is four years old. There are other obvious disparities between the recorded event and Cameron's depiction of it, suggesting that Cameron was evoking, rather than directly illustrating, Biblical narratives.
