In this study Julia Margaret Cameron's patient friend and her most photographed male subject, Henry Taylor, wears an artist's beret. He also wears the beret in several other portraits including one titled Rembrandt – modelled after the great Dutch artist. He appears in this portrait as Prospero, the wise magician and father figure from Shakespeare's play The Tempest. Cameron also made several other studies of scenes from The Tempest with Taylor as Prospero and Mary Ryan as his daughter Miranda.
