Benjamin Jowett (1817–93) was Master of Balliol College and Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford. He was an admirer and close friend of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. During the summer months Jowett rented a quiet cottage at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight near the Cameron's home and it was there he translated Plato from ancient Greek into English.
