This is a variant of the other portrait of Herschel in this exhibition. The two studies were taken on the same day in 1867. Although Herschel encouraged and admired Cameron's work since she began to photograph in 1864 he only let her take his portrait in 1867. She recounts in a letter that she had to send her photographic equipment to his home by train and arrived the following day to take the photographs. All the known portraits of Herschel were taken during the same sitting.
