Cameron's treatment of this subject is un-complicated and direct, the model's head is fully frontal and seems to radiate out of the dark background. In contrast, her eyes suggest that something is not being revealed. Sir John Herschel, who praised the photograph, described the model's expression as 'wild' and 'startled'. The title of this photograph is a stanza from a John Milton's poem L'Allegro, (1632).
