The Honourable Francis (Frank) Charteris (1844–70) was a student at
Balliol College, Oxford and was also part of an avant-garde literary group in
the 1860s. Charteris was the eldest son of Lord and Lady Elcho and would have
inherited the title of 11th Earl of Wemys and large estates in Scotland.
However, he died prematurely at the age of twenty-six as a result of a gun
accident at his family home.
