In his youth Edward John Eyre (18151901) migrated to Australia, where he
initially worked as a cattle drover. With his Aboriginal companions he led
the first party to cross South Australia from east to west. The Royal
Geographical Society awarded him a gold medal for this achievement. In 1846
he was made Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand. He later became Governor of
the Caribbean islands of St Vincent and then Jamaica.
