Cameron depicted her only daughter, Julia Norman (1839-73), as a mendicant or member of a religious order. She wears a dark robe and veil, her eyes are downcast and there is an expression of concentrated reflection on her face. Julia Norman was outlived by both her parents, she died in childbirth in 1873, leaving her six young children.
