Clemenger Contemporary Art Award 2003

Peter Callas

Peter Callas is pre-eminent among contemporary artists for whom new image-making technology is their primary medium... Vinculum is a series of panoramic and variously formatted digital prints, the images for which were gathered during a four-month residency at Sanskriti Kendra in New Delhi, with extensive travel through Rajasthan, Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Vinculum diverges in materiality and format from the manipulated video works for which Callas is so widely known. Yet the technological experimentation (in this case with a digital camera) and narrative qualities in the Vinculum images maintain a conceptual unity with Callas’s previous projects, especially in his representation of cultural specificities and exploratory mapping of terrains.
