About this work
The identity of the woman in this oil sketch has long been a mystery. The plump yet delicate features of the model have been painted quickly and confidently with almost calligraphic use of diluted black. Her resemblance to the ‘stage mother’ in Degas’ ballet scenes is noteworthy, suggesting that she might also have served as a model for Degas’ larger ensemble pieces. This study has been painted directly over another portrait of a woman. The painting has been re-framed according to Degas’ known preferences.
