Despite the activity of many local artists through the 1880s it was not until the 1890s, under directorship of Bernard Hall, that much Australian art was purchased for the National Gallery of Victoria. This work was purchased in 1894 directly from the Victorian Artist's Society exhibition and shows Fitzroy Gardens, which were originally a forest of manna gums, divided by a deep ravine, which is now a small trickling creek.
