Selected landscapes (1866 - 1980) from the
National Gallery of Victoria.
Painting Australia is an Internet program prepared for students of VCE
Art Unit 2 - Common Themes in Australian Art
Introduction
The dominant theme in Australian art has always been the landscape.
Since European settlement, artists from other nations as well as the local-born
have interpreted the land through their experiences and the philosophies of the day.
This set of landscapes is representative of the changes in interpretation that have taken place.
Painting Australia is also a useful resource for:
- VCE Studio Arts Unit 2 and 4 - The artist as designer and the artist as producer.
- VCE Australian Studies Unit 4 - Australia - a changing culture.
- VCE History Unit 4 - Australian History.
The selection of art works represents the way artists have used a common theme to
respond to their environment or their experience of life.
The information given for each art work provides an introduction to the:
- historical and social context
- subject matter and artistic qualities
- influence of Australian and other cultures
- materials and technique
This information together with the suggested considerations and research is designed
to assist students with analysis of the selected art work including:
- description of the art work
- subject matter
- qualities of the art work
- technique
- style
- inspiration
- meaning and intention
- personal response
All works listed in the program will not necessarily be on display at the one time.
