1275/3The critical issue of the attribution of this painting has occupied scholars for over a hundred years. Recent opinions range from it being a copy of a van Eyck by a near contemporary to it being an original composition by one of his followers. The latter opinion is convincing due to certain compositional characteristics which are not consistent with van Eyck.
The subject matter here is the Virgin shown as 'Queen of Heaven', indicated by the richly embroidered baldachino, the cloth canopy, and the isolation of the group. However, when van Eyck painted her in this manner, she was invariably placed on an elaborate throne, whereas in this painting she is seated on a cushion in the pose of the 'Madonna of Humility'. The use of such a pose is not a trait of van Eyck and indicates another artist at work. The inscription in the background is also not consistent with those found in van Eyck's work.
Although the painting is probably not by van Eyck, it is a work of outstanding quality by a master yet to be identified.List other works from the Master's Eye exhibition
