Simon Marmion is best known as a miniaturist and book illuminator who worked in the Burgundian court of the noted patrons Philip the Good and Margaret of York.

In many ways Marmion was a radical artist who introduced and developed the use of new colours and colour relationships which made him a pioneer in the depiction of atmospheric effects in landscape. He used subtle gradations of delicate soft blues and greens in a pale light, which creates illusions of natural conditions, space and depth. Some scholars controversially believe that Marmion painted the first pure landscape.

He is also noted for the clarity of his narrative and sensitive conveying of the emotions of his characters. Portraying the Madonna, with her hands clasped in prayer while nursing the Christ Child, is a traditional way of showing the pair. And Marmion has the child firmly cradled in the Virgin's arms, which lends humanity to the relationship and the scene.
