EA2-1971Magritte was one of the leading figures of the Surrealist movementan art form which sought to free itself from traditional notions of picture making. Magritte painted in a meticulously realistic style, which he used to reinforce a recurring theme of Surrealism which plays with our expectations of illusion and reality, sense and non-sense.
In this painting we are floating outside the window of a house expecting to see a furnished interior through the open window. Instead, we are confronted with what we might see if we were inside a house looking out.
Window frames, framed mirrors and doorways were common motifs in Magritte's work and he used them to structure his composition and play on the theme of transition and perception.
