Jacopo TINTORETTO Venetian 1518–1594 Doge Pietro Loredano c.1567–70 oil on canvas 109.5 x 93.0 cm Felton Bequest 1928 3677-3		Tintoretto's seniority and high status in Venice meant that he painted the portraits of numerous Doges of Venice, and he painted Pietro Loredano at least four times. There are two nearly identical versions of this three-quarter-length portrait and recent cleaning and technical examination indicates that this is the first of the two. Analysis has shown that Tintoretto made several quite subtle alterations by painting over parts of it, indicating that it would not be a replica or second version. The main changes are in the pose, which was stiffer and more upright, and the costume, which is more indicative of the body it covers, and they make the Doge appear more relaxed, thus breaking down the barrier of formality. Tintoretto captures the strong character of his sitter and his rapid yet careful brushstrokes give the work much energy and vigour.
