Explore the social, religious and political context of the Dead Sea scrolls.

Discover the Dead Sea Scrolls. Unravel the past through these ancient biblical texts and related artefacts and learn about the significance of the knowledge revealed in the scrolls. This program will examine the history of Judaism, the emergence of Christianity and the relationships between different religious traditions, values and societies.
Includes guest speakers, introduction to the exhibition and exhibition viewing of the Dead Sea Scrolls and explores links with the antiquities collection.

Colin McCahon: A Time for Messages

In this program, relationships will be considered between the exhibitions Dead Sea Scrolls and Colin McCahon: A Time for Messages. The Dead Sea Scrolls represents the earliest surviving texts from the Bible while McCahon's work is noted for the way he combines biblical subject matter, script and text.

Compare and contrast the religious meaning and purpose of the Dead Sea Scrolls in light of the values, structures and sensibilities of Jewish communities in the pre-Christian Era. Consider the relationship between different religious traditions and societies. Discover how ancient people lived, communicated and organised their lives in reference to their religious beliefs and rituals. This program will investigate the history of Judaism and the emergence of Christianity and includes introduction and viewing of the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition and a tour of the permanent collection.
Lectures will include:
Scrolls, Scripture and Archaeological discoveries an introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls Gordon Morrison, Coordinator, Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition.
Globalisation BCE, the Dead Sea Scrolls in religious, cultural and historical context Geoff Jenkins, Director of Ancient and Classical Languages, The University of Melbourne.
This program is a collaborative project with the History Teachers Association of Victoria and the Catholic Education Office and the Jewish Museum of Australia.

A free education resource is available for middle years of schooling to explore links between the exhibition and CSF 11 Key Learning Areas, in particular Studies of Society and the Environment, Mathematics, Science, Technology and the Arts. The education resource is in the form of a trail and has been produced to make the Dead Sea Scrolls more accessible and enjoyable for schools.
