inscribed in black ink l.l.: Russell Drysdale
Private collection, Sydney

In 1943 and 1944, Drysdale completed a group of highly coloured works on paper, his most important in the medium to that time, which stand out in his oeuvre. Several of these, including Soldiers, Albury platform and the two works entitled Airport at night (I and II) , depict night-time images of war, providing Drysdale with the opportunity of creating sinister compositions through great contrasts of colour.

Albury Station provided Drysdale with a rich source of subjects. Here the Victorian and New South Wales railway lines changed gauge, resulting in long delays which meant that soldiers frequently clustered on the platforms.
