In this conversation piece, the emphasis is strongly placed on the bonds of family and is the epitome of a patriarchal portrait. The deference towards the obviously self - satisfied father figure is emphasised by the worshipful gaze of Leigh's wife and the dutifully admiring son. The classical setting and fine clothes reflect the status of the Leigh family, members of the prosperous middle class.
