Paolo Veneziano is arguably the most important
and influential panel painter of the early fourteenth century. Veneziano
introduced to Venetian painting a new impulse towards Byzantinism, which
he combined with Western Gothic innovations.
Icnographically,
this painting shows strong Byzantine elements, such as the Virgin, in
a blue on the left, fainting in the arms of her female companions.
The round arch above the cross suggests that the work may have formed
part of the middle panel of a triptych from an altarpiece.
