PERINO
del VAGA
Florentine 1501-1547
The Holy Family
c. 1545-46
oil on wood panel
101.0 x 74.4 cm
Felton Bequest 1966 1666-5
Perino was part of the workshop of Raphael, but he had already developed
the strong drawing skills that were necessary for all Italian artists
of the sixteenth century long before he entered that studio.
For this painting, not only is the strength of draughtsmanship clearly
evident but the dynamic composition, particularly the complex folds
in the drapery of the Virgin, shows the hand of a true master. Perino
has created a subtle but bold combination of colours for her costume.
By combining his strong painting technique, dynamic use of colour and
the elegant composition typical of Florentine mannerist artists, Perino
has created a very graceful and beautiful treatment of the Holy Family.
