Richard Grenville, who wears the white robes,
the chain and the badge of the Order of the Garter, is posed like one
of Van Dyck's royal portraits of Charles I. Grenville, who later succeeded
to the title of Earl Temple, also inherited one of the most famous English
eighteenth century landscape gardens, Stowe, which was designed by Capability
Brown.
