A Welsh landscape has here been transformed into an Italianate composition
in the manner of Claude Lorrain or Gaspard Poussin. It was painted only
a few years after Wilson had returned from Italy and this is possibly
his first painting of Wales. Dolbadarn castle is an ancient fortress
at the entrance to Snowdonia.
