The Quarters behind Alresford Hall
1816
oil on canvas
33.5 x 51.5cm
Gift of Mrs Ethel Brookman Kirkpatrick, 1958

The Quarters refers to the eighteenth century fishing pavilion in
the grounds of Alresford Hall, Essex. A feature in the park, it was
designed in the fashionable Chinese style. The building still exists
although it has been relocated and is now set back from the water's
edge. The painting was one of two views of the property commissioned
from Constable by the owner, Colonel Slater Rebow in August 1816. The
other view, a larger painting, Wivenhoe Park, Essex, is in the National
Gallery of Art, Washington DC.
