The
uphill Road Cezanne painted The Uphill Road in May 1881 when he
was
staying with Pissarro at Pontoise. It is not the picturesque elements
of the village that attracted his interest but rather the exploration
of the geometric relationship between buildings and landscape. The painting,
which belongs to a transitional period in Cezanne's work, remained,
like many of his paintings, unfinished.
