The small town of Vetheuil, where Monet and his family lived for three years from 1879, is on the river Seine between Paris and Rouen.
Of the many views he painted of the town from the river and from the island opposite, this is the most vibrant.
The iridescent summer light is depicted in high key colour and broken brush strokes. These qualities perfectly demonstrate the impressionists' vision of painting nature as a 'vibration of colour'.
