The Journey

Marshall Claxton
An emigrant’s thoughts of home 1859

Initially more men emigrated than women. To address this gender imbalance the English government created incentives to encourage single women to emigrate. Many women were greatly assisted by Caroline Chisholm who since 1841 had campaigned for better conditions during their travel and upon arrival and settlement in Australia.
