About this work

Hera Roberts was a painter, illustrator and designer, best known for her bold, modern cover designs for The Home Journal. A cousin of Thea Procter and companion of the publisher Sydney Ure Smith, Lambert found her an inspiring subject: ‘I am having a shot at a portrait of the beautiful Thea Procter cousin [of] Hera Roberts tomorrow and this most expensive luxury may help to set me on my … feet.’  – George Lambert to Amy Lambert, 1924
