Exactly 100 years ago, the businessman and philanthropist Alfred Felton established The Felton Bequest under the terms of his will. Since then, the Felton Bequest has provided for the National Gallery of Victoria works of incomparable value and quality, transforming the collections of the NGV in every conceivable way.
The centenary symposium has been conceived to throw new light upon, and to celebrate, not only the achievements of the Felton Bequest in relation to the National Gallery of Victoria, but also to examine other significant gifts and bequests which have made a major contribution to our nation's public art collections.
A distinguished group of scholars and curators will present papers which explore this theme. The symposium will therefore offer interesting and rich insights into the history of private philanthropy and public art museums in Australia.
