Aim

To explore Cubism and respond to the work.

Preparation

To do this activity you will need to:

Individual Task

Observe the fractured and fragmented objects. How do they relate to a cubist painting? What meaning and message is conveyed by the title of this work?

Research Questions

Research other works by George Segal. After viewing several works comment on what you see as distinctive about his style?

Group Task

Compare and contrast Cubist works by Pablo Picasso and two by Georges Braques. List the similarities and differences between the works ( refer to subject, size, colours, texture, composition).

Discussion Questions

What effect do you think Segal is trying acheive make by including a mop and musical notation paper in the tableaux?

Would the meaning and message of this work be the same if it was a painting?
