Aim

To do a formal analysis of Muller’s style and approach to landscape.

Preparation

To do this activity you will need to:

Individual Task

  • Critically observe Muller’s The Northerly Set # 8,20,21,22,32,36,97 & 104, 2002-2003. Describe how the sectioning or segmentation of the sky affects the interpretation of the image.
  • Is the original location of the landscape important to an appreciation of the work? Explain your answer.
  • Explain how you think Muller’s love of music and his work as a DJ may have affected this piece.
  • Some critics have described Muller’s style as eclectic. If this is true, how then has he developed a distinctive style?
  • Describe how he uses formal elements, signs and symbols within this piece.
