NGV 150

The National Gallery of Victoria turns 150 on 24 May, 2011

This is a major milestone in the history of Australia’s first public art gallery and an exciting moment for Victorians to celebrate their outstanding art collection and the achievement of artists.

NGV 150 will be an opportunity to welcome all Victorians to see and experience the great Collection, exhibitions and programs of the NGV. It also serves as an important moment to reflect upon the amazing philanthropic history of the NGV. With regular announcements throughout 2011 about important new works that have been acquired through our Masterpieces for Melbourne fundraising campaign, the NGV Collection will continue to grow for the enjoyment of future generations.

Especially for our anniversary year and with the support of the Victorian Government, we are creating new displays and re-contextualising parts of the NGV Collection at NGV International, with new works and interpretations.

NGV Unveils Major Anniversary Gift

The NGV is turning 150 years old. To honour this tremendous milestone, the NGV has unveiled an exceptional gift of 173 important Indigenous works of art including three by contemporary artists Vernon Ah Kee, Brook Andrew and Jonathan Jones who were commissioned to create works that pay homage to the highly celebrated Wurundjeri artist, William Barak. These pieces have been gifted by the Felton Bequest, established in 1904 by the NGV’s greatest benefactor, Alfred Felton.
