Conservator of Objects - 12 Month Fixed Term Contract

Classification VPS3.1

VPS3.1.1 - $50,175 per annum + 9% Superannuation

The conservation department is seeking suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Conservator of Objects. Specialization in the conservation of metals and/or a particular interest in the conservation of contemporary art would be very highly regarded (but not essential).

This position will play an important role within the NGV's Objects conservation team. The appointed candidate will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of artwork materials from the various collections, including (but not limited to) archaeological metals and large outdoor sculpture. We would welcome applications from conservators with experience or willing to specialize in three-dimensional contemporary art.

The position is based in the Conservation Department's recently refurbished facilities at NGV: International, located on St Kilda Rd, Melbourne.

Applicants must have a tertiary qualification from a recognised art conservation training programme or equivalent, including experience in the examination and treatment of high value works of art. Well developed practical skills are essential, as is the ability to carry out complex treatments with limited supervision. A broad knowledge of materials and methods used in the construction of works of art is required. Well-developed interpersonal, communication and organisational skills are essential.

Fellowships in Painting Conservation

H.D.T. Williamson Foundation Painting Conservation Fellowships

VPS 2.1.6  – $42,116 per annum + 9% Superannuation - Fixed Term Contract

The Painting Conservation Department of the National Gallery of Victoria seeks expressions of interest for two fixed-term contracts for Fellowships in paintings conservation to be funded by the H.D.T. Williamson Foundation.  These two-year positions will commence in August 2009, and will report to the Conservator of Paintings.

The Fellowships are development positions in which the participants will receive professional development through supervised participation in all areas of Painting Conservation’s operations and responsibilities.  This includes the documentation, treatment and maintenance of the Gallery’s collection.  Additionally, the fellows will be involved in research into the materials and techniques of paintings in the collections of the NGV.

During the course of the fellowship the fellows will be expected to carry out a major conservation project under the supervision of a conservator of paintings.

NGV Voluntary Guides

Classification Voluntary

NGV Voluntary Guides have been providing daily tours and talks for visitors to the National Gallery of Victoria since 1968.   The guides are a dedicated group of people with a comprehensive knowledge of the NGV Collection and a passion for art.

In the coming months a new group of guides will be recruited followed by a training program starting next year and finishing in 2011, the NGV’s 150th anniversary. 

If you have a strong interest in the visual arts and wish to join our Voluntary Guides, please read the attached Information Sheet (Click on Role Statement) for more details about the training program and selection criteria. 

There will be an Information Evening for prospective applicants on Thursday 6 August at 6.00pm, in the Clemenger BBDO Auditorium, NGV International, St Kilda Road, Melbourne. Entry to the auditorium is via the NGV northern entrance adjacent to the Arts Centre forecourt.
