This education resource accompanies the exhibition SONGS OF AUSTRALIA VOLUME 16 - SHH, GO BACK TO SLEEP (an un-Australian dob-in mix) (2004), which featured the work of Australian artist and 2002 Contempora Fellow Alex Danko. References to the artist's childhood and his experiences as a child of immigrant parents growing up in the suburbs of Adelaide appear throughout the work, and are used to reflect the differences and similarities between the social, cultural and political landscape of Australia, then and now. This resource discusses Danko’s work and gives a brief background to the two former Contempora winners, Fiona Hall and Ricky Swallow. It also raises issues and topics for consideration that are relevant to studies of art, English and politics and to discussions concerning the nature of art competitions.
