Darkness & Light
Caravaggio & his World
This education resource accompanies the exhibition Darkness & Light: Caravaggio & his World (2004) which featured key paintings demonstrating the scope and quality of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio's (1571–1610) revolutionary vision. The Caravaggisti (artists who copied Caravaggio's style) were also represented in the exhibition including works by Bartolomeo Manfredi, Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, Georges de la Tour, Jusepe de Ribera and Gerrit von Honthorst. This resource highlights key works, ideas and themes from the exhibition including a discussion of Caravaggio and his world, the street life of Caravaggio’s Rome, collectors and patrons, the spread of Caravaggio’s influence, and a chronicle of the artist as outlaw. Selected works by Caravaggio and the Caravaggisti are considered in detail and are accompanied by maps, a historical timeline, discussion points and learning activities.
