Howard Arkley

This education resource accompanies the retrospective exhibition Howard Arkley (2006–2007) which assessed and celebrated Arkley’s singular contribution to the history of twentieth century Australian art. Arkley is popularly conceived as the foremost painter of Australian suburbia yet his signature houses and domestic interiors were always produced in dialogue with his preoccupation with abstraction and pattern. The resource features detailed information about the artist and his work, audio interviews with the curator and conservator who worked on the exhibition, an interactive activity designed to develop students’ compositional skills and learning activities and questions for exploring Arkley’s art.
