Impressionism

Romanticism developed across Europe following the French Revolution. In society and art, formality was increasingly rejected in favour of spontaneity and the imagination. Colour was preferred over line, and sketches over finished paintings. Impressionism grew from this new emphasis on spontaneity. Artists left their studios to paint from nature. Using portable paintboxes, they developed techniques to capture fleeting effects of atmosphere and light.
