The Art of Zen

Year Levels Years 5–12

This education resource, created to complement the Art of Zen exhibition (2004), focuses on the art and aesthetics inspired by the philosophy of Zen. Drawing on material from the NGV’s Asian collection, in particular the arts of China, Japan and Korea, the resource introduces students to the history of Zen and its impact on Asian art and Western culture. Objects from the 16th Century to the 21st Century are examined, including calligraphy and painting by Zen Buddhist monks, Negoro lacquer used in Zen temples, and ceramics used in the tea ceremony.
