I have been inspired by fifteenth and sixteenth-century manuscripts and alchemy, particularly the Voynich Manuscript with its indecipherable language and unconventional imagery. I have always drawn in a way that reflects how children view the world. The ambiguous characters represent a dreamlike state and a childish mindset. I would like my audience to feel they were picking up a book in a foreign language for the first time, creating their own narrative from illustrations that made little sense. The inanimate objects, food and pattern work around the characters emphasise this obscurity.
