cotton thread on collage of torn and cut coloured Japanese paper, typeset paper, black paper
32.5 x 66.5 cm irreg. (variable)
Firbank Grammar School, Brighton
I explored pattern and was inspired by Del Kathryn Barton and Nancy Goodman Lawrence. The thread represents delicacy and craft, and the faces reflect the concerns I had in 2011. The left face shows its back reflecting a hesitation to move forward through life. The middle face is enclosed by blackness, indicating the stresses of Year 12, constrained by the chaotic atmosphere of school. The final face is defiant and strong being the only one to connect with the audience – it shows its determination and confidence after having journeyed through such a year.
